In our fast paced, hyper connected world, anxiety has become almost a baseline state. Between the constant influx of information, social pressures, and a culture that rewards hustle over rest, many of us are stuck in a chronic fight or flight mode. But our bodies were never designed to sustain high cortisol levels indefinitely. This is where energy based therapies like Reiki offer a powerful and surprisingly scientific reset.
Understanding Anxiety Through the Nervous System: Anxiety is not just a mental state. It is a full body physiological response. When the nervous system detects a threat (even if it is just a flood of emails or a difficult conversation), it triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, repeated activation of this system can lead to fatigue, insomnia, digestive issues, and of course more anxiety.
Reiki and the Theta Brainwave State: Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that uses gentle touch (or no touch) to channel universal life force energy into the body. What is happening in the brain during a Reiki session is particularly fascinating. Studies using EEG monitoring have shown that Reiki can shift brain activity into the theta wave state, a deep state of relaxation similar to what occurs in meditation or light sleep.
Theta waves (4 to 8 Hz) are associated with:
Activates the parasympathetic nervous system and lowers cortisol levels.
Increases serotonin and dopamine
Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
Activates rest and digest mode
Releases muscle tension, especially solar plexus.
Increases creativity and intuitive insights
This brainwave state is where true healing can begin. It allows the body to down regulate from stress, initiate cellular repair, and restore emotional balance.
Research has demonstrated that during Reiki sessions, both practitioners and recipients exhibit increased theta wave activity. For instance, a study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found enhanced coherence within the theta band between pairs of brains during Reiki sessions, suggesting a shared state of deep relaxation and connection.
Why the Solar Plexus Matters: Energetically, anxiety is often stored in the solar plexus, the area just below the sternum. In both Reiki and traditional Eastern medicine systems, this center governs personal power, confidence, and the ability to process life experiences. Physiologically, the solar plexus chakra corresponds to a dense bundle of nerves known as the celiac plexus. This nerve network plays a key role in the autonomic nervous system and is highly responsive to emotional stress and trauma.
When we experience trauma, the solar plexus area can become overstimulated and the surrounding muscles often tighten. Over time, this can lead to chronic tension, shallow breathing, digestive issues, and a persistent feeling of internal pressure or tightness.
Reiki helps to dissipate blocked energy and soothe the nervous system, encouraging the release of stored emotion and hormonal buildup. Clients often report a melting or unclenching sensation in their stomach or diaphragm during sessions, a clear sign that their body is transitioning out of survival mode and into healing mode.
Our Culture Does Not Teach Us How to Slow Down: We live in a society that prioritizes doing over being. Rarely are we taught how to slow down, breathe deeply, and let the nervous system recalibrate. Instead, we power through burnout, treat symptoms with quick fixes, and suppress emotions that need release. Reiki offers a counterbalance, a space to simply be. To allow. To reset.
This is not about magic. It is about giving your body what it desperately needs, a chance to feel safe, grounded, and supported long enough to start healing itself.
